Date and Raisin Truffles

The festival of lights and fire crackers just got over and like every year the customary feasting of sweets was also not ignored at all. Sweets just cannot be ignored in my family. But it’s not the same for everyone. I have friends and relatives coming home alarmed with diabetes or other health issues or say, “I don’t eat sweets now”. The Diwali goodies of traditional sweets were replaced by dry fruit hampers and cookies as a sign of reluctance among the health conscious people around. The sweet character was slowly showing a face off this festive season.

Now a days young women don’t fancy the idea of preparing anything traditional at home but always prefer some fashionable store bought items for festivals. This compelled me to try my simple easy no cook sugar free sweet with some health benefits on my mind. Practice what you preach goes a famous saying. So it should begin from home, I was advised by my health expert to include flaxseeds in my diet and I had no clue about it. I was given a list of food items to be included in my daily diet. Keeping all this in my mind, I decided to combine dates, peanuts and Iranian black raisins along with flaxseeds giving it a fancy fashionable coating of dark chocolate. This turned out to be perfect for any occasion and this can be easily replaced with the traditional sweets with no added sugar. Yes without any sugar, the dates and Iranian raisins add the sweetness for these truffles.

Like the Nutty chocolate truffles, this truffle does not have biscuit crumbs or cake crumbs. It is flavored with a little rose water as I wanted everything to be natural for this decadent sweet. You can try adding a little ghee or even extra virgin olive oil to give an extra kick to this dates and raisins that’s combined with powdered peanuts and flaxseeds. This recipe gives about 15-20 small sized chocolate balls.

Ingredients:-

  1. Dates (deseeded) – 1 cup.
  2. Toasted Peanuts – 4 Tablespoons.
  3. Roasted Flaxseeds – 4 Tablespoons.
  4. Mixed/Black Raisins – Half Cup.
  5. Rose Water – half Tablespoon.
  6. Dark Chocolate Square – Melted.

Method:

  • Dry roast flaxseeds, cool and powder them. Combine flaxseeds and peanuts, grind them together until mixed.
  • Add the deseeded dates and pulse to combine them with the nuts mixture. (Use a FP/food processor for better results). Once done add rosewater and transfer to a mixing bowl.
  • Add the raisins and roll into small sized balls. Oil or dab a little rosewater onto your palms while rolling the balls.
  • Melt the chocolate on top of a double boiler. Coat each ball in the melted chocolate by rolling well and allow it to cool on a sheet of aluminium foil or parchment paper. You can transfer to refrigerator for quick cooling. Make ahead and Store in an airtight container.
